The Marble Falls High School softball team enjoyed the fruits of its labor at the Austin Independent School District tournament Feb. 22-24.

The Lady Mustangs (5-5-2) crushed Austin Eastside Memorial 12-0, Austin Northeast 10-0, and Austin Navarro 13-3 and tied Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy 7-7 in a contest Marble Falls led 7-5.

“The kids came in and did a great job,” head coach Alex Lozoya said.

No stat was more glaring than the plate production.

Cheyenne Blair went 2 for 2 at the plate, coming through when the bases were loaded and produced RBI.

He noted that Makenzie Ryder “stepped in, and she had a very good weekend swinging the bat.”

Cheyenne Thompson “had multiple big hits for us,” he said.

junior Sophia Biagini had 3 doubles, 2 walks and 2 singles.

“Overall, I think the kids are doing a great job of seeing the ball,” Lozoya said. “I would attribute that to the work (assistant coach Hailey) Wooten does with them.”

The challenge now, he said, is to stay sharp on the issues they’ve fixed while not faltering in other parts of the sport.

“We fix something one week and then something else creeps in,” Lozoya said. “It’s part of coaching. We’re trying to find a way with things we’re cleaning up. We start off aggressive and we get ahead, and we want to stay ahead.”

He noted the Lady Mustangs are plating multiple runs in an inning only to have opponents respond in their next at-bat.

“We have to stay ahead and win at the end,” the coach said. “We want to take a different approach and a different mindset.”

Marble Falls’ five wins is very encouraging, Lozoya said.

“We are ahead of where we were the year before,” he said. “We have opportunities to finish games and add them to the win column is what we want. And that’s what makes them feel good. We have to find ways to get over that level.”

The Lady Mustangs welcome Pflugerville Weiss in their home opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27.

“We have one more week of non-district play before we get ready for Jarrell (in the District 24-4A opener),” Lozoya said.
